Management of Behavioral Disturbances in Dementia Dental

Knowledge-Trainees should be able to:

  1. Recognize the risk and sequelae of poor oral care in dementia patients with agitation during oral care.
  2. Recognize the common causes of oral pain in dementia patients and the non-verbal cues which may indicate discomfort in the mouth.
  3. Recognize oral side effects of medications commonly used for control of behavior in dementia patients with common behavior problems.

Skills-Trainees should be able to:

  1. Recommend strategies for gaining safe access to the oral cavity and completing oral care for dementia patients with agitation during oral care.
  2. Describe a collaborative care plan utilizing the expertise of interdisciplinary team members to provide solutions for patients resistive to oral care.

Attitudes-Trainees should be able to:

  1. Realize the challenge of providing routine oral care for resistive dementia patients.
  2. Appreciate the expertise and contribution of interdisciplinary team partners in the provision of oral care for resistive dementia patients.
