Information About AGS

The American Geriatrics Society

Founded in 1942, the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) is a nationwide, not-for-profit association of geriatrics health care professionals dedicated to improving the health, independence and quality of life of all older people. The Society supports this mission in many ways through activities in: clinical practice; professional education on the clinical care of older people; research; public education and information; public policy efforts; and by collaborative relationships with other organizations.

About The American Geriatrics Society

Founded in 1942, the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) is the leading clinical society devoted to the care of older adults. The AGS promotes high quality, comprehensive and accessible care for America's older population, including those who are chronically ill and disabled. The organization provides leadership to health care professionals, policy makers and the public by developing, implementing and advocating programs in patient care, research, professional and public education, and public policy.

Its 6,000 members include primary care physicians, geriatricians, geropsychiatrists, nurse practitioners, social workers, physician assistants, physical therapists, pharmacists and others from the U.S. and around the world who are dedicated to improving the health, independence and quality of life of all older people.

The AGS has long championed efforts to expand the national work force of clinicians with the knowledge, skills and attitude to care for our aging population. Since the early 1990s, with funding from the John A. Hartford Foundation of New York City, the AGS has worked effectively to increase geriatrics expertise among sub-specialists in internal medicine, practicing primary care physicians, and non-primary care specialists.

In 1999 the AGS reached beyond its traditional role as a professional medical society and launched the Foundation for Health in Aging (FHA). The FHA aims to build a bridge between the research/practice of geriatrics health care professionals and the public, and to advocate on behalf of older adults regarding issues of wellness and preventive care, self-responsibility and independence, and connections to the family and community. The Foundation for Health in Aging

The AGS Foundation for Health in Aging, established in 1999, works to build a bridge between geriatrics health care professionals and the public, and to advocate on behalf of older adults and their special needs: wellness and preventive care, self-responsibility and independence, and connections to the family and community. The Foundation champions initiatives in public education, clinical research and public policy that:

  • Advance the principles and practice of geriatric medicine

  • Educate policy makers and the public on the health care needs and concerns of older adults

  • Support aging research that reduces disability and frailty, and improves quality of life and health outcomes
  • Encourage older adults to be effective advocates for their own health care
  • Help family members and caregivers take better care of their older loved ones and themselves
