PRAIRIE BAND POTAWATOMI 9TH ANNUAL GATHERING

| The Prairie Band
Potawatomi of Kansas hosted a gathering of Potawatomi tribal members from
around the nation. The gathering is an opportunity for Potawatomi people to
et together and share traditions, socialize, trade, barter and address
issues of common importance. |

Health
screenings were conducted during the three-day event. Screening checks
included blood pressure, glucose levels, cholesterol levels, hearing, body
composition, mental status, and an analysis of risk factors for such
diseases as heart disease and diabetes. At risk participants were given
counseling on practicing a healthier lifestyle and seeing a doctor
regularly. Children and adults were also screened for reading comprehension
and developmental status. |

NATIVE AMERICAN CHURCH, ANNUAL MEETING
|
| Members of the
Native American church gathered for their annual meeting in June 2002
outside Mayetta, Kansas. The KS-RIT offered free health screenings to all
meeting participants. University of Kansas Medical Center students in
medicine, nursing, speech/language/hearing, and dietetics/nutrition. |

TEEN WELLNESS CAMP
|
| Students from
the KS-RIT helped plan and facilitate a teen wellness camp for Native
Americans at Haskell Indian Nations University. The camp was a part of the
Diabetes Prevention Program at the Indian Health Services clinic at Haskell. |

well as IHS personel conducted heatlh screenings at the Prarie Band
Potawatomi's bingo hall on September 26th, 2002. |
